Mobile Mail Rising – Up to a Whopping 41.6 Percent of Time Spent on Mobile Internet

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

It’s up from 37.4 percent last year, growing faster than any other category. Now we know what users do when they’re online on their mobile — and email totally dominates over all other online mobile activities.

Nielsen Reports Mobile Mail Dominating Internet Activity

The top online Internet activity on the mobile is email. And it's rising too, according to Nielsen. Good news, we intend to make that time even nicer and more productive.

Reported by Nielsen on average 41% of the mobile Internet time is spent on Mobile Mail, dwarfing portals on 2nd place as well as social networks on 3rd. Still, social networks and blogs are up too and grew from 8.3 to 10.5 percent.

Mobile mail not only dominates, but is growing much faster than any other activity. In strong contrast to mobile, email time spent on the desktop declined by 28 percent last year. The trend is clear. Because email is always urgent people try to do as much as they can on the mobile. This shift will just continue, e.g. as manifested Google’s Eric Schmidt’s statement and shift to think “mobile first”*.

But this is no news. Mobile Documents users and we’ve known it all along. It’s just a confirmation. We know – it’s not “mobile first” – but rather “mobile mail first”. (Just check out the pie chart.)
